What is Pilates?

Pilates combines deep core strengthening with stretching, coordination, control and balance.  It works to reshape and re-educate the body by creating long, lean muscles, increasing flexibility, supporting the spine, improving postural alignment, and establishing graceful movement patterns.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

  • Develops a strong core of abdominal and back muscles to strengthen and improve flexibility of the spine.
  • Creates body awareness.  It teaches you how to be in your body – how to properly sit, stand, bend, lift and move.
  • Changes muscle cell memory so the body moves more efficiently and in better alignment on its own.
  • Improves your sex life because of the strengthening and increased awareness of pelvic floor muscles.
  • Strengthens, lengthens and tones the whole body.  It can make you appear taller as it teaches you to move from a place of length and grace.
  • The Pilates approach to body conditioning doesn’t fatigue separate muscle groups.  Instead, it requires nearly the whole body to participate in the exercises. You may feel a little sore after a lesson as your muscles “wake up” to new movement and increased spring resistance as you progress.

Pilates “is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work out.”

Pilates “develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.”
